In the near future the world economy hits bottom and doesn't bounce. THE BLOCK is a narrated collection of stories that tell about how one community from one segment of the US population binds together in defiance of hardship and as a result, redefines social security. Times are difficult but as folks do when they work together, adversity is overcome and they always manage to have fun.
The story is set in Red Bluff, California. A happenstance community of seniors is formed as a by-product of the Federal Real Property Repurposing Act of 2025. That act was one of many knee-jerk legislative actions delivered from a guilt ridden congress in the wake of the Social Security Revision Act of 2025. SSRA-2025 stripped Social Security and Medicare benefit funds to the bone and then transferred them to the states for management and administration.
Attracted by the FRPRA's newly created affordable housing, seniors from all walks of life found common circumstance and purpose. They tightened their belts, formed mini enterprises, and found new ways to thrive. By 2028 the community was chartered as a cooperative and officially recognized by the State of California as The Red Bluff Senior Project, aka The Block.
For the promise of Social Security to be broken the coffers in the US Treasury had to be bare. Explanation for when, why, and how is provided but it is the backdrop, not the story. The story is about the guile, smarts, and hustle from folks that almost forgot they still had it. The story is told by Doug Richards, the narrator and one of the Block's earliest residents and oldest survivors.
Richards tells the story of The Block using a compilation of anecdotes and humor to describe the challenges and triumphs of the folks living there; the things he called old glory that were part of Block community living.
Doug Richards' stories are told with fondness, recalling the antics of his enterprising partners Big Steve Waterman, a retired ship's engineer; a truck named Dudley; a renegade programmer who goes by the handle Fat Nancy; a slick former sales and marketing executive, Tommy Trabadoro; Dan 'Whitey' Harrington,a wannabe comedian and ex-maintenance worker; and a female boxer dog named Billie Jean. And to be sure, their wives and girlfriends are a force to be reckoned with. The stories of their lives are enriched by supporting characters like the moonshiner from North Carolina, a healer from the Tlingit Tribe in Alaska, the pet whisperer, a health pragmatica guru, a bona fide space cowboy, and a host of others.
There were no jobs for seniors but folks still found a ways to exchange value and earn coin. After all seniors know how to do stuff, lots of stuff;they just may be a little out of practice. Richards' stories are light social commentary establishing the power of will and the fire that burns within at any age. Doug Richards and his partners were just some of the many new entrepreneurs in the Block engaged in friendly competition or collaboration. All the Block enterprises were as spirited as the next.
This is a story for everyone. But it's Generation X and Baby Boomers that will most closely identify with the Block's characters when considering their own possibilities for 'what if.' The Block, Just Live 'cuz You Can reminds the reader that 'what-if' doesn't matter because life is life and there's always a way. And the way is always forward.
The Block Just Live 'cuz You Can edition by Richard Seaman Literature Fiction eBooks
THE BLOCK by Richard Seaman is well written, and being a senior myself, quite appealing. I enjoyed this book very much. THE BLOCK is a unique story of survival of old folks when hard times hit. The younger generations can learn a thing or two from those of us who have the wisdom of age and are not afraid of a little hard work. The characters are well developed, and while the story is set in the future, it was very easy to relate to something which could be happening now. There are good lessons in THE BLOCK everyone should learn—never stop working; never give up on life; always strive to improve your situation; life, and everything that goes with it (good and bad), doesn’t end until you die. Life is a never-ending learning process. THE BLOCK will give you a little insight into how important that is in our uncertain future. It is in your own best interest to add THE BLOCK to your reading list today.Product details

The Block Just Live 'cuz You Can edition by Richard Seaman Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
One day, the stock markets crashed and kept on going. A victim of its drive to world disarmament, the United States government finally admitted bankruptcy, and the shockwaves travelled out in many directions. The Block Just Live ‘cuz you Can is the story of the Baby Boomers in the early 2020s, with the central government placing the responsibility for their care on the states, pension plans vanished, and healthcare slashed to skin and bones, finding a new way to survive and look after each other. Doug Richards and his wife are two of the earliest arrivals in a community made available under the Federal Real Property Repurposing Act of 2025. It will come to be known as The Block.
The Block is a near-future what-if story, showcasing Richard Seaman’s incredibly strong characterisation as he describes how an incredibly motley group of older people band together and find ways to cope without the healthcare, the pensions, and the government support they’d been told to expect all their lives. Doug Richards is the protagonist of the story, and his first-person narration lets you experience his resilience and courage first-hand as he and his neighbours learn to look after themselves, working odd jobs and gleaning crops when they need to, and using barter for skills and equipment around the neighbourhood to make sure that everyone can eat. This book will give you a glimpse of ordinary people in old bodies and extraordinary circumstances, and make you smile through tears.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
A book with thorough character development. By the end, I felt I had actually lived on "the Block It was an easygoing walk through their lives with some life's lessons stories.
There was something very special about the characters on The Block~ Their grit, humor and compassion for each other gives us a positive vision, if you can say that, of a really possible future scenario in our crazy socieo-economic roller coaster of a present time. Take heed, all ye over 50, this could be our "Guide to Survival In Economic Hard Times." ~!
Well written and entertaining book, especially for his first. An interesting look into the future that seems quite possible with intriguing twists and turns that keep you reading. Interesting and funny characters with solid development. Political discussions that will make you both think and smile. I enjoyed the read and expect many others will as well.
After reading Richard Seaman’s first book, “The Block”, I’m hoping there are many more to come. Richard's ability to weave a good story and develop a cast of characters that are easy to related to, makes the book a very enjoyable read. With humor, sensitivity, and an understanding of how people should get along, Richard makes it so you want to move into “The Block “ At my age (80) ...I'm going to take his advice..." Just live cuz You Can.
This is one of those books, where you get a sense of familiarity almost immediately. The author brings you in with a relatedness to current events and topics that are relevant to our lives, especially those of us who are heading out of our youth and contemplating our future as we accept the changing of the personal landscape to include more gray.
The characters are well developed each has one or more endearing characteristics and an odd quirk or two. The story line is extremely interesting given the current political, economic, climate and cultural issues that challenge us today.
In general, a great read and a real feel good story!
