This is a short story about two starry-eyed lovers whose thoughts are only for each other and are looking forward with estactic delight to the time when they would be joined together til death parts them. Then war happens and with great sadness the two part, believing that their love is so strong that as long as they are pledged to each other nothing can intervene to tear them apart not even death. With this strong conviction, he is obliged to go off to the conflict as a war correspondent and it really does seem that he is surrounded by special protecting angels. The funny thing is that he is totally oblivious to the dangers that are all around him but cheerily confidant that the love he shares with his intended will protect and keep him until they are reunited.
This short story is set during the Spanish American War, but transcends time. It concerns the dangers faced by a war correspondent, but it transcend occupation. Still as. Meaningful Noe, more than a century later.
A study in the customs and mores of a 1950's artsy bohemian community. Funny and scathing at times. For the reader who loves art criticism and what it means to be an artist.
This is the first book I've read by this author. I appreciated her biography at the end of the book which I would have preferred at the beginning. It made me interested in reading more of her novels since she based many of them on her life. The character development was excellent and the plot was interesting. The author's philosophical mind and intelligence was evident although, at times, I thought the book was too academic for relaxing enjoyment.
Some parts of this books are great. But other parts are hard to believe pages and pages of incompetent-sounding people discussing philosophy via old playwrights, with untranslated paragraphs in French and Latin. And I cannot forgive the ending. The ending in The Group revived hope. This ending sounds like McCarthy just decided to drop the whole thing.
I love this book mostly because I can relate to it. We began reading part of it in class this morning and I just had to finish the book.. it's that good. I would highly recommend it.
